    The effect of vitamin E on mast cells in small intestine of broilers under heat stress

    ΔΕΝ ΥΠΑΡΧΕΙ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗThe aim of this study is to identify the effect of vitamin E (DL-α-tocopherol acetate) (300 IU/kg) on mast cells in the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum and ileum) under heat stress. In the study, 42 one-day-old Ross 308 male broiler chicks were used. The chicks were randomly separated into 3 groups as follows; control (22±2°C), heat stress (35°C, 5 hours/per day) and vitamin E (300 IU/kg/per day) + heat stress (35°C, 5 hours/per day). The applications of heat stress and vitamin E began on the fifteenth day and ended on the thirty-fifth day. Tissue samples were taken from animals in each group of four and five-week-old chickens. Tissue samples were fixed in BLA (Basic Lead Acetate) solution. The sections were stained with toluidine blue (TB) (pH 0.5) and alcian blue-critical electrolyte concentration (AB-CEC) (pH 5.8, 0.3 M MgCl2) / Safranin O (SO) (pH 1.0) combined method. It was determined that increasing of the exposure duration to heat stress increased the number of mast cells in the small intestine of the boilers. Also, it was revealed that vitamin E reduced mast cell population under heat stress. Consequently, heat stress may play a role in the pathogenesis of small intestine-associated with disorders and the supplementation of vitamin E can contribute to regulate small intestine functions of broilers by decreasing mast cell proliferation and activation under heat stress

    In an emerging economy, energy is a crucial input. Turkey as an oil dependent country, the volatility of oil price might affect more than thought. In this study, the impact of oil price changes in Turkish macroeconomy has been examined. A VAR model is built by using quarterly data from the first quarter of 2003 to the first quarter of 2013. Variables used in the model are Brent oil price, gross fixed capital formation, interest rate, us GDP and inflation. We believe that the analysis has demonstrated the fragility of Turkish economy to oil price volatility with its significant results in the relationship between oil price and main macroeconomic indicators. This study also shows the incredible need of sustainable energy policies to make a country’s economy stable

    Adaptive nonlinear hierarchical control of a quad tilt-wing UAV

    Position control of a quad tilt-wing UAV via a nonlinear hierarchical adaptive control approach is presented. The hierarchy consists of two levels. In the upper level, a model reference adaptive controller creates virtual control commands so as to make the UAV follow a given desired trajectory. The virtual control inputs are then converted to desired attitude angle references which are fed to the lower level attitude controller. Lower level controller is a nonlinear adaptive controller. The overall controller is developed for the full nonlinear dynamics of the tilt-wing UAV and thus no linearization is required. In addition, since the approach is adaptive, uncertainties in the UAV dynamics can be handled. Performance of the controller is presented via simulation results

    Integrating meaning into quality evaluation of machine translation

    Machine translation (MT) quality is evaluated through comparisons between MT outputs and the human translations (HT). Traditionally, this evaluation relies on form related features (e.g. lexicon and syntax) and ignores the transfer of meaning reflected in HT outputs. Instead, we evaluate the quality of MT outputs through meaning related features (e.g. polarity, subjectivity) with two experiments. In the first experiment, the meaning related features are compared to human rankings individually. In the second experiment, combinations of meaning related features and other quality metrics are utilized to predict the same human rankings. The results of our experiments confirm the benefit of these features in predicting human evaluation of translation quality in addition to traditional metrics which focus mainly on form

    Applying Taguchi and Grey relational methods to a heat exchanger with coil springs

    Paper presented to the 10th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Florida, 14-16 July 2014.The goal of this investigation is to apply Taguchi and Grey relational methods, to a concentric heat exchanger application, in order to optimize the design parameters. Coil spring types of the turbulators are used in the experimental study. The design parameters are; Reynolds number (3000 ≤ Re ≤ 10000), outer diameter of the springs (Ds = 7.2, 9.5 and 12 mm), number of the springs (Ns = 4, 5 and 6) and the incline angle of the springs ( = 0, 7 and 10). Nusselt number and friction factor are the results of the study. As a result, the effects of Re, , Ns, and Ds on Nusselt number is found to be 79.9%, 3.11%, 1.70% and 13.8%, respectively. Furthermore effect of all told four parameters on friction factor is found as 56.72%, 2.98%, 13.16% and 22.57%.dc201

    ETAP: Energy-Aware Timing Analysis of Intermittent Programs

    Energy harvesting battery-free embedded devices rely only on ambient energy harvesting that enables stand-alone and sustainable IoT applications. These devices execute programs when the harvested ambient energy in their energy reservoir is sufficient to operate and stop execution abruptly (and start charging) otherwise. These intermittent programs have varying timing behavior under different energy conditions, hardware configurations, and program structures. This article presents Energy-aware Timing Analysis of intermittent Programs (ETAP), a probabilistic symbolic execution approach that analyzes the timing and energy behavior of intermittent programs at compile time. ETAP symbolically executes the given program while taking time and energy cost models for ambient energy and dynamic energy consumption into account. We evaluate ETAP by comparing the compile-time analysis results of our benchmark codes and real-world application with the results of their executions on real hardware. Our evaluation shows that ETAP’s prediction error rate is between 0.0076% and 10.8%, and it speeds up the timing analysis by at least two orders of magnitude compared to manual testing.acceptedVersio

    Akathisia is a movement disorder characterized by an inner sense of unease, unrest and dysphoria.Suicidal behavior related with akathisia in patients is one of serious harmful behaviors and requires rapid intervention.There is limited number of cases about venlafaxine-associated akathisia in the literature, but it is not still yet known exactly what the actual incidence is.Side effects associated with antidepressants should be closely monitored and should be kept in mind without irreversible conditions. In this case report we will conclude about a case in which rapid development of akathisia and suicidal behavior occurs following venlafaxine treatment initiated with a non-psychiatric indication

    Retrospective analysis of thoracic trauma and evaluation of the factors affecting the duration of stay in the hospital

    Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the epidemiological and demographic features, treatment types of patients with thoracic trauma, as well as the duration of hospital stay and the factors affecting mortality.   Material and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included patients who applied to the emergency room in a tertiary care hospital, between 2017–2019 and having thoracic trauma. Patients; age, gender, date of application, type of injury (blunt or penetran), arrival saturation, use of anticoagulants, type of injury, side of injury (right, left, bilateral) additional injury, hospitalization and mortality status were recorded. P < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant.   Results: Total of 113 people were included in the study. The average age was 52.15 ± 20.3. The most common reason of applying to the hospital was falling with 50 patients. A negative weak correlation was found between saturation and age and hospital stay. In terms of pathology and gender, there was no statistically significant difference in mortality.   Conclusion: As a result, in this study, thoracic trauma occurs mostly in men and due to falls and motor vehicle accidents, and the majority of injuries due to thoracic trauma can heal without follow- up or tube thoracostomy
